As the winemaker and general manager, Michael Larner's expertise stems from an MS degree in Viticulture & Enology from UC Davis and a BS in Geology from the University of Colorado. With international apprenticeships, including E. Guigal in France and Marchesi Antinori in Italy, Michael's multicontinental experiences shape Larner's boutique winery. Fluent in French and Italian, he judges at prestigious wine competitions, embodying a passion for Rhône-style wines and noble grape varieties—Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Viognier. Michael's involvement extends to the Santa Barbara Vintners' Association, and he is a founding architect of the Ballard Canyon AVA, cementing its status as a premier California Syrah territory. Larner Vineyard & Winery stands as a testament to sustainable, organic practices, producing small-batch, world-class wines that echo the essence of their exceptional terroir.

Michael, the wine maker, hosted us, a group of 8, at the vineyard. We sat outside at a long outside table surrounded by the vines and grapes. As we tasted, we also walked around the vines, even got to taste the grapes since it was harvest season. All the wines we tasted were very lovely. We purposed several bottles to take back to Chicago with us. I would highly recommend visiting this beautiful vineyard with gorgeous views located in Los Olivos.
Smallest tasting room I’ve seen. Small number of wines available for tasting. Wines were good but the price point is very high. $15 tasting fee. Our server, Jenny, was excellent and made for an enjoyable visit.
Small friendly tasting room. The grapes are sourced to many of the best wineries for use in some of best Syrah blends in California. The growers own efforts are well done. Very good juice. Highly recommended.
Phenomenal wines with by-the-glass pours at the center of town. Stopped by on the July 4th holiday about 1 hour to close. We were apologetic about cutting close but we never once felt pressured to be on our way. Owner was incredibly hospitable and kind. Highly recommend this tasting room next time you head to Los Olivos!
The secret is out, Larner makes great organic wines. One of the few wineries where everything is good.
